Raleigh Maternity Photographer | Michelle Gunton Photography

If you've been searching for a Raleigh maternity photographer with real experience in this market, I'm Michelle Gunton — and I've spent 19 years photographing over 300 maternity sessions across Raleigh, Wake Forest, and the surrounding Triangle. I'm Ranked #1 Artistic Wedding Photojournalist in the United States by the AGWPJA and Ranked #5 in the World — not because I follow a formula, but because after nearly two decades I know where the light falls at 6pm in October versus 6pm in June, I know how to guide a nervous mama into something genuine, and I know that posing experience — the kind that makes a 30-weeks-pregnant body look powerful instead of awkward — isn't something you learn quickly.

My private studio is 20 minutes north of Raleigh, and I photograph sessions across the entire Triangle. Many of my maternity clients go on to book with me as their newborn photographer in Raleigh too — and when the same photographer documents both seasons, the continuity shows in every frame.

Sessions begin at $450 + tax. → View maternity session pricing and check current availability.

Why Raleigh Mamas Choose Michelle Gunton for Their Maternity Session

Not all maternity photography is the same — and if you've spent five minutes on Instagram, you already know that. There's a real difference between stiff, over-posed bump photos and images that actually feel like you.

My sessions are built around three things: natural light, real emotion, and giving you space to just be. I'm not rushing through a checklist of poses or barking directions across a field. I'm watching for the quiet in-between moments — the way you instinctively rest your hands on your bump, the look you exchange with your partner, the way the light hits you at 6:47pm and everything just stops.

I also bring over 19 years of experience to every session — which means I know how to flatter a bump at every angle, how to work around exhaustion and nerves, and how to get something genuinely beautiful even on a cloudy Tuesday.

The result is a gallery that feels timeless, warm, and unmistakably yours.

Raleigh-Area Maternity Session Locations I Love

The Triangle has some genuinely stunning backdrops — and knowing where to shoot at what time of day makes all the difference. After 19 years of photographing families across this area, I know exactly where the light is magic and where it falls flat.

Here are some of my favorite locations for maternity photography in the Raleigh area:

My Studio in Youngsville, NC

My studio at 340 Thornwood Lane in Youngsville is where most of my maternity sessions happen — and for good reason. A studio session gives us complete creative control: perfect light every single time, a curated wardrobe of maternity gowns in every size, no weather worries, and an intimate environment where you can fully relax and be present. If you’re not sure whether studio or outdoor is right for you, we’ll figure it out together during your consultation. (More on that below.)

JC Raulston Arboretum — Raleigh

One of my absolute favorite outdoor locations in the Raleigh area. The arboretum offers incredible variety — lush gardens, canopied pathways, and open grassy areas — all within minutes of downtown Raleigh. Sessions here photograph beautifully in late afternoon light, and the setting gives galleries a timeless, editorial feel.

Dorothea Dix Park — Raleigh

Wide open fields, sweeping skyline views, and gorgeous golden hour light make Dorothea Dix one of the most sought-after locations for outdoor maternity photos in Raleigh. It’s particularly stunning in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom and in fall when the grasses turn golden.

E. Carroll Joyner Park — Wake Forest

If you’re based in Wake Forest or north of Raleigh, Joyner Park is a beautiful option. The rolling meadows, wooden bridge, and mature tree lines create a naturally romantic backdrop that photographs beautifully in any season.

Historic Downtown Wake Forest

For mamas who want something with a little more character and texture — brick walls, quiet streets, architectural details — downtown Wake Forest offers a uniquely warm and intimate feel. It’s a great option for couples who want something that feels more personal and less “standard park session.”

Open Fields Near Louisburg, NC

Some of my most breathtaking maternity galleries have been shot in the open fields and meadows surrounding Louisburg. The wide sky, natural grasses, and complete absence of crowds make this an ideal location for golden hour sessions that feel truly cinematic.

Your Home

In-home maternity sessions are underrated and deeply personal. There’s something special about being photographed in the space where you’ve been nesting, decorating the nursery, and imagining life with your new baby. In-home sessions work especially well for lifestyle-focused maternity galleries and for mamas who are most comfortable in their own environment.

Not sure which location fits your vision? That’s exactly what our pre-session consultation is for. We’ll talk through your vibe, your due date, and where the light is going to be magic for your specific window.

When to Schedule Your Raleigh Maternity Session

Timing is one of the most common questions I get — and the answer is almost always: sooner than you think.

The sweet spot: 28–34 weeks.

At this stage, your bump is beautifully full and round, you're typically still comfortable enough to move freely, and you've got enough energy to actually enjoy yourself. After 36 weeks, things can get unpredictable fast.

When to book: early second trimester.

My calendar fills 8–10 weeks out during peak season (spring and fall especially). Locking in your date early gives you flexibility on timing, location, and session prep.

What Happens During Your Maternity Session

Here's the honest version: most mamas are nervous walking into a maternity session. That's completely normal. And almost without exception, they're laughing and relaxed within the first 20 minutes.

Before your session:

You'll receive a full styling guide covering wardrobe, color palettes, and what to bring. We'll connect on a pre-session call to walk through your vision, finalize your location, and make sure everything feels right.

During your session:

I'll guide you through natural, flattering movement — no awkward arm confusion, I promise. We'll find the light, move through the space, and leave plenty of room for the real moments to happen. Partners and older children are absolutely welcome; I'll direct everyone so you can just be present.

After your session:

You'll receive your full gallery within three to four weeks. Galleries are delivered through a beautiful online portal with print ordering built right in.

Studio vs. Outdoor Maternity Sessions in Raleigh — Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions I get from Raleigh mamas is simple: should I do a studio session or go outdoors? The honest answer is that both are beautiful — they’re just different experiences that produce different results. Here’s how to think about it.

Studio Maternity Sessions

Most of my maternity sessions take place in my studio in Youngsville, NC — just north of Raleigh — and there are real reasons for that. Studio sessions give us:

  • Consistent, beautiful light regardless of time of day, season, or weather
  • Access to my full maternity wardrobe — a curated selection of gowns and dresses in every size, at no additional cost
  • Complete creative control over the mood, backdrop, and style of your images
  • A relaxed, private environment where you don’t have to worry about other park visitors or unpredictable conditions
  • Flexible scheduling — we’re not racing the sunset or rescheduling for rain

Studio sessions tend to produce images that feel more timeless and editorial — think soft, glowing, beautifully lit portraits that focus entirely on you and your bump. They’re especially popular for mamas who want a more polished, styled look or who want to incorporate multiple wardrobe changes.

Outdoor Maternity Sessions

Outdoor sessions have their own kind of magic that a studio simply can’t replicate. There’s something about being surrounded by wide open fields, golden evening light, and the natural landscape of the Triangle that creates images with a completely different emotional quality — expansive, cinematic, and deeply connected to place.

Outdoor sessions work best when:

  • You want a golden hour, sunset, or natural landscape feel
  • You have a specific location that’s meaningful to you
  • You love the idea of movement, wind in your hair, and a more organic, unposed feeling
  • You’re comfortable with some session flexibility around weather and light timing

Can I do both?

Yes — combination sessions are available and popular. Many mamas love starting in the studio for styled portrait looks and then heading outside for golden hour photos. If that sounds like you, mention it when you reach out and we’ll talk through timing and logistics.

Still not sure? That’s what the consultation is for. We’ll talk through your vision and I’ll tell you honestly which approach is going to give you the gallery you’re imagining.

About Michelle — Why Experience Matters for Maternity Photography

I've been photographing families across Raleigh, Wake Forest, and the surrounding Triangle for 19 years. In that time, I've photographed hundreds of maternity sessions — everything from first-time mamas who cried happy tears the whole session to third-time moms who just wanted one really good photo before the chaos of a new baby arrived. I've shown up for all of it.

I also know this from personal experience: pregnancy is fast. It feels long in the moment, but the photos — the ones you actually have — become some of the most treasured images you'll ever own. I've had clients reach out years later just to say thank you. That never gets old.

My work has been recognized by the photographic society of Raleigh and was named Photographer of the year in 2011. Was also recognized nationally. And more than any of that, I've built a client experience that prioritizes how you feel from first email to final gallery delivery.

This is what you're investing in — not just a photographer, but someone who takes this as seriously as you do.

Maternity Session Investment & What's Included

Investing in maternity photography is about more than getting pretty pictures (though you will absolutely get those). It's about having proof — real, tangible proof — that this season happened. That you were here for it. That you glowed, even when you didn't feel like you did.

Every Michelle Gunton Photography maternity session includes:

  • Personalized pre-session consultation
  • *client wardrobe (*add on) and styling guide
  • Up to 60 minutes of on-location photography
  • Professional editing of your complete gallery
  • Online gallery delivery with print release included

Sessions begin at $450.00+tax.

Maternity + newborn sessions are also available for families who want to document both seasons — and many clients find that having the same photographer for both creates a beautiful, cohesive story from bump to baby.

Frequently Asked Questions — Raleigh Maternity Photography

If you've been searching for a maternity photographer near Raleigh or Wake Forest, here are the answers to the questions I hear most:

What should I wear for my maternity session?

You'll receive a full styling guide after booking, but the short version: flowy fabrics, earthy or muted tones, and silhouettes that show your bump tend to photograph beautifully. Most mamas bring two to three outfit options and we decide together based on location and light. I'll walk you through everything — you won't be on your own figuring this out.

Can my partner and kids come to my maternity session?

Absolutely, and I love it when they do. Including your partner and older siblings adds real depth and emotion to a maternity gallery. I'll direct everyone so the experience feels natural rather than chaotic. If little ones are joining, plan for slightly longer timing.

How many photos will I receive?

Most galleries include 30–60+ fully edited images, depending on how many people are involved. Every image you receive has been individually color-graded and edited.

Do you offer outdoor and indoor maternity sessions?

Yes — both are available. Outdoor sessions using natural golden-hour light. Indoor studio or in-home sessions are wonderful for winter months, or for mamas who want something more intimate and lifestyle-driven. We'll figure out what fits best for you during the beginning emails.

How far in advance should I book a Raleigh maternity photographer?

I recommend booking 8–16 weeks before your ideal session window (28–34 weeks). Spring and fall dates fill fastest. If you're further along and hoping to still get in — reach out anyway. Last-minute availability does occasionally open up.

What happens if the weather is bad for an outdoor session?

That's the great thing about having a studio. We can move your session indoors.

When is the best time of year for outdoor maternity photos in Raleigh, NC?

Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the sweet spots for outdoor maternity sessions in the Raleigh area. Spring brings wildflowers, lush greenery, and soft light. Fall offers golden grasses, warm tones, and the most beautiful sunset light of the year. Summer sessions are absolutely doable — we just schedule them for early morning or golden hour to avoid harsh midday light and heat. Winter outdoor sessions can be stunning too, especially in bare-tree wooded areas with a moody, editorial feel.

What month of pregnancy is best for maternity photos?

The sweet spot is 28–34 weeks — this is when your bump is full and beautifully round, you’re typically still comfortable and mobile, and you have enough energy to actually enjoy the session. Most mamas feel their best during this window. If you’re past 34 weeks and haven’t booked yet, don’t panic — reach out anyway. I’ve photographed stunning sessions at 36 and even 37 weeks. The key is getting on the calendar before baby decides to arrive early.

Is 32 weeks too early for maternity photos?

Not at all — 32 weeks is actually right in the middle of the ideal window. At 32 weeks your bump is beautifully full and round, you’re typically still comfortable moving and posing, and you have plenty of time before delivery to receive and order your gallery. Many of my most stunning maternity sessions have been at 32–33 weeks. If anything, waiting too long is the more common mistake.

Is it worth it to do a maternity photoshoot?

This is one I feel strongly about. Pregnancy moves fast — it feels endless in the moment, but once your baby is here, those weeks blur together almost immediately. The maternity photos you invest in now become some of the most treasured images you’ll ever own. I’ve had clients reach out years later, long after their babies became toddlers and then school-age kids, just to say thank you for those photos. You can always take more family photos later. You only get one chance to document this specific season. It’s worth it.

How much does a maternity photoshoot cost in Raleigh, NC?

Michelle Gunton Photography maternity sessions begin at $450 + tax and include a personalized pre-session consultation, up to 60 minutes of photography, professional editing, and online gallery delivery with full print release. Maternity wardrobe access is available as an add-on for studio sessions. If you're also planning a newborn session, many families choose to book both at the same time to lock in their newborn date — newborn spots fill quickly, and having the same photographer for both creates a beautifully cohesive story from bump to baby.

What are the best locations for maternity photos in Raleigh, NC?

The Raleigh area has some genuinely beautiful options depending on the look you’re going for. Top outdoor locations include Dorothea Dix Park for wide open fields and skyline views, JC Raulston Arboretum for lush garden settings, E. Carroll Joyner Park in Wake Forest for meadows and tree lines, and open fields near Louisburg for a cinematic golden hour feel. My studio in Youngsville — just north of Raleigh — is also available for studio sessions and is where the majority of my maternity sessions take place. During your consultation we’ll decide together which location fits your vision, timing, and due date.

Do you offer maternity and newborn photography?

Yes — and honestly, booking both together is one of my favorite things. When I photograph your maternity session and then your newborn session, there's a continuity to the images that you simply can't get with two different photographers. The editing style matches, the experience is familiar and comfortable, and you end up with a cohesive visual story from bump to baby. Many families choose to book their newborn session at the same time as their maternity session just to lock in their date — newborn spots fill fast, and having the same photographer for both makes the whole experience seamless.

What should I do to prepare for my maternity session?

You’ll receive a full prep guide after booking that walks you through everything in detail. The short version: start thinking about wardrobe early (flowy fabrics, muted or earthy tones, and silhouettes that show your bump tend to photograph beautifully), stay hydrated and rest well the day before, and plan to arrive without rushing. If you’re doing a studio session, consider having your hair and makeup done beforehand — it’s not required, but many mamas love feeling extra polished for their gallery. Most importantly: plan to enjoy yourself. The best maternity photos happen when you’re relaxed and present, not stressed about getting the perfect pose.

Can I do maternity photos if I’m not feeling confident about my body?

Yes — and I’d argue this is exactly when you should do them. I say this with complete sincerity: almost every mama who walks into a session feeling self-conscious walks out having seen herself in a way she never expected. Pregnancy is powerful, and the camera has a way of showing you what you can’t always see in the mirror. My job is to find your light, guide you into positions that feel natural and look beautiful, and create a

Do you photograph maternity sessions for plus-size mamas?

Absolutely — and I want to say this clearly: my studio wardrobe, my posing approach, and my editing style are all designed to work beautifully across every body type. I photograph mamas of all sizes and shapes, and I approach every session the same way: finding the angles, light, and movement that make you feel like yourself. If you have questions or specific concerns going into your session, bring them up during the consultation. Nothing is off limits to discuss.
