Your wedding day is going to move fast — faster than anyone warns you. The nervous laugh before the ceremony, your dad pretending he isn’t tearing up, the moment the salt air catches your veil on the way out. I’m Michelle, a Wilmington NC wedding photographer based in Raleigh, and for 19+ years and more than 400 weddings my whole job has been to catch those moments as they actually happen. My style is documentary and photojournalistic, ranked #1 in the U.S. by the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association (AGWPJA). I don’t stop your day to stage it; I move with it. When I’m not photographing weddings in the Triangle, I’m on the coast, photographing weddings from Wilmington down to Ocean Isle Beach.
Most couples tell me the same thing on our first call: “We don’t want to feel posed.” Good — neither do I. A wedding near the water already has everything a story needs: wind, golden evening light, a crowd of people who love you, and a timeline that never goes quite to plan. My job is to stay one step ahead of all of it.
That means I’m watching for the in-between moments — your grandmother’s hand on your arm during the vows, the flower girl who sits down in the middle of the aisle, the two of you laughing at something nobody else heard. When we do slow down for portraits, I’ll give you something to do instead of something to hold, so the photos look like you, not like a catalog.
And because coastal light is beautiful but a little unforgiving, we’ll plan your portraits around it together, usually saving a few minutes for the hour before sunset, when everything turns soft and warm. You don’t need to think about any of that on the day. That’s what you’re hiring me for.
Dana and Ashton were married at Malachi Meadows in Currie, NC, a countryside venue just northwest of Wilmington in Pender County. It was a warm spring day, and I drove down from Raleigh to photograph it. The moment I still think about came before the vows: as Dana started down the aisle, Ashton lost it. He didn’t try to hide the tears, and he didn’t look away from her for a second. Those are the photos I live for, because nobody posed them and nobody could have.
It’s a good example of what most of my coastal weddings look like: a couple who wanted their families front and center and photos that felt like the day itself. You can see more of the day in Dana and Ashton’s full Malachi Meadows wedding story.
If you’re getting married anywhere in the Cape Fear region, I’d love to hear about it. I’ve photographed weddings right in Wilmington, including Jennifer and Sean’s wedding at Airlie Gardens, surrounded by the gardens’ moss-draped live oaks. I photograph weddings in downtown Wilmington and along the riverfront, out on Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Figure Eight Island, and at the farm and countryside venues spread through Leland, Hampstead and Pender County. Whether you’re saying your vows on the sand or under a canopy of live oaks, the approach is the same: real moments, honest emotion, and very little standing around.
Wilmington is part of a stretch of coastline I know well. I’ve photographed beach weddings on North Topsail Beach and at Sunset Beach — each with its own wind, tides and light to work with. If you want to see how I handle a ceremony with the ocean right behind you, those galleries are a good place to start.
A lot of my couples start with an engagement session. It’s the easiest way to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day, and it gives us a chance to figure out how you move together. I’ve photographed them everywhere from the beach to a family farm, including Jenna Cooper, who you might recognize from ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise, on her family’s farm. You can see more of my engagement photography here.
A lot of the couples I photograph near Wilmington live in Raleigh, Durham or Wake Forest and chose the coast for the day itself. If that’s you, you already know my work — it’s the same photographer behind my Raleigh wedding photography, with roughly two decades of Triangle weddings and a long list of venue coordinators who keep recommending me. For you, that means one less unknown: you can meet me for coffee close to home, and I’ll be the one standing at the end of the aisle on the coast.

Documentary and photojournalistic. I photograph your day as it unfolds rather than staging it, with relaxed, guided portraits that don’t feel stiff. My work has been ranked #1 in the U.S. by the AGWPJA.
As soon as you have a date and a venue. Coastal spring and fall Saturdays tend to go first, so if you’re looking at those months, reach out early.
