North Topsail Beach Wedding Photographer
As a North Topsail Beach wedding photographer, I'm there for the parts of your day nobody plans: the wind grabbing the veil, a nephew kicking off his shoes before the processional, your dad going quiet the second he sees you at the top of the dune crossover. I'm Michelle Gunton. My coastal home base is down in Brunswick County, where I focus on Ocean Isle Beach wedding photography, and I happily make the drive up the coast for Topsail Island couples. With 19+ years and 400+ weddings behind me, and a photojournalism-style approach ranked #1 in the U.S. by AGWPJA, I photograph your wedding the way it actually happens, not as a checklist of poses.
Why Couples Choose North Topsail Beach for Their Wedding
North Topsail Beach sits at the quiet north end of Topsail Island, a 26-mile barrier island between Wilmington and Jacksonville. It's mostly beach houses, dunes, and sea oats, with the New River Inlet at the very tip. No boardwalk crowds, no high-rise skyline, and plenty of room to spread out on the sand.
That's exactly why couples love it. A North Topsail Beach wedding usually looks like this: everyone rents houses on the same stretch of beach, the ceremony happens a few steps from the back deck, and the whole weekend turns into one long family reunion with better lighting. (And a few more sandy feet than Aunt Linda planned for.)
How I Photograph a Topsail Island Wedding
Beach weddings don't sit still, and I don't either. The light changes fast, the breeze off the ocean has its own plans, and the best moments happen in the middle of all of it. Instead of stopping your day to set up shots, I move with it: reading the light, watching the people who matter most to you, and getting the photo before anyone thinks to pose.
Then, when it's time for portraits, I keep them short and easy. A walk down to the water, a few minutes in the sea oats, and you're back with your guests. Nobody wants to spend cocktail hour away from the party (or the crab dip).
North Topsail Beach Wedding Rules Every Couple Should Know
Good news first: the Town of North Topsail Beach does not require a permit for a wedding on the public beach. A few town rules still shape how your day comes together:
- Leave it like you found it. The Town's one ask for beach weddings. All beach equipment has to come off the sand every day; anything left out between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. gets removed.
- No glass on the beach. Beer and unfortified wine are allowed on the public beach for guests of legal age, but in cans or plastic only. Liquor is not allowed in public without a state permit.
- Stay off the dunes. Guests have to use marked crossovers and beach accesses. Good news for photos: those wooden crossovers make a beautiful frame for a processional.
- Parking is paid. North Topsail Beach charges for parking at all town-controlled lots, so build that into guest directions, or keep everyone at the rental houses.
- Marriage license. North Topsail Beach is in Onslow County, and the Town points couples to the Onslow County Register of Deeds.
Getting Married During Sea Turtle Season
Topsail Island is a haven for sea turtles. From mid-May through August, loggerheads come ashore to nest, and volunteers walk every mile of the island each morning to find and mark new nests. If your wedding falls in summer, you may end up with a roped-off nest near your ceremony spot. It's honestly one of the sweetest details a Topsail wedding can have.
- Give nests room. Chairs, arches, and beach gear need to be at least 20 feet from any marked nest, and nothing can sit directly between a nest and the ocean.
- Mind the lights. The Town asks for oceanfront lights to be off at night, because lights confuse nesting turtles and hatchlings. If your reception is at a beach house, plan string lights on the street-side deck or inside, and save the bright sparkle for away from the dune line.
- Go early. Morning or late-afternoon ceremonies give you softer light, cooler guests, and an easier time around nesting season rules.
Wedding Venues on North Topsail Beach
Most Topsail Island weddings land in one of a few settings, and each photographs differently:
- The public beach. The classic. Wide sand, open sky, waves in every frame, and no permit from the Town.
- Oceanfront rental houses. The most popular choice up here. Getting ready, ceremony, and reception in one place means more real moments and less time in the car. Check with your rental company first: not every house allows events.
- North Topsail Beach Town Park gazebo. The gazebo and picnic shelter can be reserved through Town Hall. Only one reservation is approved per day, the park stays open to the public, and alcohol isn't allowed anywhere in the park.
- Topsail Manor. A dedicated event venue on North Topsail Beach, built in 2017 with more than 8,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. A good fit for bigger guest lists or couples who want a backup plan for weather.
Serving North Topsail Beach, Surf City & All of Topsail Island
I photograph weddings from one end of Topsail Island to the other: North Topsail Beach, Surf City in the middle, and Topsail Beach at the south end, plus Sneads Ferry just across the water. Each town has its own beach rules, so I'll help you figure out which ones apply to your spot.
Planning something farther south on the coast? I also photograph Sunset Beach, NC weddings in Brunswick County.
What It's Like to Work With Me
I'm calm, I move quietly, and I will never ask your grandmother to hold a pose in the sun. I learned how to read a wedding day over two decades of wedding photography in Raleigh and across North Carolina, which means I know when to step in (fixing a boutonnière, rounding up cousins for family photos) and when to disappear. Collections start at $2,775; you can see what's included in my wedding collections, or read answers to the questions couples ask most.

No. The Town of North Topsail Beach does not require a permit for a wedding on the public beach. The Town asks couples to leave the beach the way they found it. Glass is not allowed on the beach, and anyone walking to the ceremony needs to use a marked crossover or beach access instead of walking over the dunes.

Michelle Gunton Photography wedding collections start at $2,775, with pricing based on coverage hours and add-ons such as a second photographer. Most Topsail Island couples choose coverage that runs from getting ready through the ceremony, portraits by the water, and the reception.

Yes. The gazebo and the picnic shelter at North Topsail Beach Town Park can be reserved through Town Hall. Only one reservation is approved per day, the reservation covers the gazebo or shelter only, and the rest of the park stays open to the public. Alcohol is not allowed anywhere in the Town Park.

Yes. Sea turtle nesting season in North Carolina runs from mid-May through August, and weddings still happen on the beach all summer. Chairs, arches, and other beach equipment have to stay at least 20 feet from any marked nest, and nothing can be set up directly between a nest and the ocean. Oceanfront lights should be off at night, so plan evening lighting at a beach house with that in mind.

North Topsail Beach is in Onslow County, and the Town points couples to the Onslow County Register of Deeds. A North Carolina marriage license is valid anywhere in the state, so a license from your home county in North Carolina works too.

Yes. I photograph weddings across all of Topsail Island, including North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach, plus nearby Sneads Ferry. Each town has its own beach rules; the Town of Topsail Beach, at the south end of the island, asks couples to let the Topsail Beach Police Department know their wedding date and location ahead of time.
