Some weddings you remember for the flowers. Some you remember for the dance floor. Dana and Ashton's, I'll always remember for the moment Dana stepped into the aisle and Ashton completely lost it.

Dana and Ashton were married on a warm spring day at Malachi Meadows in Currie, NC, out in the Pender County countryside just northwest of Wilmington. I drove down from Raleigh for this one, and it's exactly the kind of day that keeps me saying yes to weddings around Wilmington and the NC coast. These Malachi Meadows wedding photos are a look at their day, from the quiet getting-ready moments to the very last dance.

The Moment Ashton Saw Dana Walking Down the Aisle

Every wedding has that one moment guests are still talking about at the reception. For Dana and Ashton, it happened before the vows even started.

Ashton was standing at the end of the aisle, doing his best to hold it together. Then Dana appeared. And that was the end of holding it together. The tears came fast, the kind you can't blink away no matter how hard you try, and honestly, nobody wanted him to.

After 19+ years and more than 400 weddings, I can tell you this is the photo couples come back to most. Not the posed portrait. The reaction. My approach is documentary, so I don't stage moments like this. I just make sure I'm in the right spot when they happen, because you only get one first look down the aisle.

A Spring Wedding Day at Malachi Meadows in Currie, NC

Malachi Meadows sits far enough out in the countryside to feel like its own little world, but close enough to Wilmington that out-of-town guests have an easy drive in. Between the open outdoor spaces and the reception space inside, the venue gives a wedding day room to breathe, and room for me to move around without ever getting in anyone's way.

Spring in this part of North Carolina brings a warmth that makes everything feel softer: the light, the greenery, even the pace of the day. It made for an easy, relaxed backdrop for Dana and Ashton's portraits.
