The building itself has real history behind it — an early-20th-century textile mill turned into one of downtown Raleigh's most photographed event spaces, with the exposed brick, wood beams, and industrial windows still intact from its working days. That history is part of what makes the portraits feel timeless instead of trendy.

With the rain holding steady outside, Maria's bridesmaids adjusted her dress and helped her stay composed and dry under an umbrella on the way to portraits — not exactly what she pictured for the walk to her first look, but it made for some of my favorite images of the day.

Their first look happened just inside the building, out of the rain — I positioned them near the windows so the gray daylight softened across both of their faces instead of going flat, which is the adjustment I make on any overcast wedding day at Melrose.

Reception was full string lights, cake cutting, and a dance floor that didn't empty out until the night was over — the kind of night Melrose's open floor plan is built for.
