Kristen's Bridal Portraits at Carlee Farm

Kristen decided to do her bridal portraits at Carlee Farm, her wedding venue in Oxford, NC, a few weeks ahead of the actual wedding day. It was my first time on the property, and I remember thinking almost immediately that I’d be back — the fall foliage was at its peak, and between the barn and the open fields there were more good backdrops than we had time to use in one session. Shooting bridals ahead of the wedding day is something I recommend more than couples expect. It gave me a chance to walk the grounds of Carlee Farm wedding venue without a ceremony timeline pressing on us — testing how the barn’s interior light behaves, figuring out which corner of the property held onto that fall color the longest, and scouting exactly where I’d want Kristen and Jonathon for portraits a few weeks later. Carlee Farm gives couples a choice most venues don’t: ceremony inside the barn, or outside with the farmland itself as the backdrop. Kristen and Jonathon ended up choosing the outdoor ceremony — you can see how that played out in their full wedding gallery — but for bridals, we used the barn’s interior for a completely different look: cooler light, more shadow, a lot more texture in the walls. If you’re planning a Carlee Farm wedding and considering a separate bridal session, my advice is the same I gave Kristen: pick a clear fall or spring day when the farm’s color is doing something interesting, and let it be its own shoot rather than an afterthought squeezed into the wedding-day timeline.
