Their sky stayed overcast and moody the entire afternoon, the kind of classic North Carolina weather that has couples checking the forecast every hour leading up to the day. From behind the camera, though, that's often the best news I can get — overcast skies work like a giant softbox, spreading the light evenly so there's no squinting, no harsh shadows, no fighting the sun for the right angle. Some of my favorite portraits I've taken at Melrose have come on days just like this one.

The rain held off until right after cocktail hour, which gave Kendell and Daniel and their guests time to mingle on the terrace, sipping cocktails and soaking up that cozy, romantic atmosphere before the storm finally rolled in. Nobody seemed to mind the clouds — if anything, it added to the mood.

Once everyone moved inside, Melrose's warm lighting and industrial details — the exposed brick, the tall arched windows, the timeless bones of the building — carried the rest of the day. Overcast or not, it's one of those venues that photographs beautifully no matter what the sky is doing.
